Upload and create interview
How do I upload an interview to OHD and make it accessible to researchers?
(Video in preparation)
If you have prepared an interview in post-production for further use through transcription, indexing, and presentation, or if you already have a collection of interviews that has been developed to this point, you can upload the video material to the oh.d infrastructure using the Media Management Tool (MMT).
Once the uploaded interview has been reviewed by FU staff, you can create a new interview for the interview file within your archive to make this file accessible to your users. To do this, select the “Create new interview” option in the archive and enter the stored interview data and additional information about the interview.
Which file formats can I use and upload in OHD?
The edited and post-produced interview master should be uploaded in the best possible (video/audio) quality and resolution. If you have any questions about media formats, codecs, resolutions, data rates, etc., please feel free to consult the OHD team (by email or phone) before uploading your media. The selection of the appropriate media format for long-term archiving and reuse is made depending on the source material and the technical conditions of the collection.
The following aspects should be taken into account:
- The frame rate should be the same as that of the original recording, e.g., 24, 25, or 30 fps (frames per second).
- The resolution should be the same as that of the original recording, e.g., FullHD (1920 x 1080px), SD PAL (720 x 576 px), SD NTSC (720 x 480 px).
- The image aspect ratio should be the same as the original recording, e.g., 4:3 or 16:9.
- If possible, the sound should be exported in stereo, e.g., left channel interviewer, right channel interviewee.
- If there are more than two audio tracks, please contact the OHD team in advance.
We have had good experiences with the following formats so far:
- for SD video in PAL or NTSC: DV, Quicktime ProRes HQ, Matroska FFV1, MP4 - H.264 or H.265
- for HD video: Quicktime ProRes HQ, Matroska FFV1, MP4 - H.264 or H.265
- for audio: WAV/PCM, MP3 (min. 192 Kbps), FLAC
Can I upload multiple interviews at once?
Yes, the Media Management Tool allows you to select and upload multiple files at once.
Are the interviews and their data freely accessible to every user after uploading?
No, in order for users to access all of your interview data, they must first activate their account in your archive. You can then activate these users and change their status under “Administration.” However, you can decide whether some or all of your interview data is accessible without registration. On the one hand, there is an option under “Configure Archive” that allows you to make your entire archive, including interviews, accessible without activation. On the other hand, you can decide for individual metadata under “Edit Metadata” whether it is accessible on the landing page without activation.
As the collection owner, you also have the option of not making interviews that have already been created public, thus making them inaccessible even to activated users. You can set this in both the workflow and interview views
