Chair of Modern and Contemporary History with a focus on the history of Eastern Europe at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

The chair specializes in the (Eastern European) history of the 19th and especially the 20th century; in teaching and research topics from German and Eastern European history as well as global history are treated. Oral history was a research focus of Prof. Dr. Julia Obertreis who passed away an October 11, 2023 (obituary). She has conducted and analyzed interviews on the history of the GDR, the Federal Republic, and the Soviet Union, among others, and has advanced the discussion of overarching methodological issues in oral history, especially with reference to socialist societies. Most recently, she organized an international conference on oral history and the politics of history in Eastern Europe in 2017. Various qualification theses of the chair, PhD workshops as well as courses and interview projects with students have oral history as their subject, so that a suitable environment exists here to test oral-history.digital in a research-oriented way.

At the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the research environment is being tested for a study on the oral history of migration.
